St Saviours Primary School
Little Venice, London
Making use of a typically lofty Victorian classroom space, by inserting a mezzanine floor within it, a new teaching space for young children has been created. The insertion of the mezzanine, hung from slender steel hangers, brings ceiling heights down to a domestic height, more suited to the children who use it. A lightweight steel and glass entrance leads off the street, and contrasts with the solid brickwork of the school. The design was completed in collaboration with artists who worked with the children to design and make the fish-themed balustrading, and the aquatic floor design. Builder - Boyle Contracts Ltd. Structural Engineer - Structural Solutions. Photographs - Andrew Southall. Awards: Shortlisted for an RIBA Award 1998 and 2000
